How Often Should a Business Post on Social Media?

Published 5 min read

In short

For most businesses, 2–3 feed posts a week, Stories several times a week and one Reel a week are enough — with the same content on Facebook and Instagram. Consistency matters more than volume: two good posts a week for a year beat one intense week followed by a month of silence. A monthly content calendar and scheduling posts in advance are what make it sustainable.

Most business owners ask this after a week in which they posted five times, followed by a month in which they posted nothing. The short answer: you need less than you think — but more consistently than most businesses manage. Here are the numbers that work for a business, what to post so you don't run out of ideas, and how to keep it up without racking your brain every morning.

The numbers that work for most businesses

  • Feed posts: 2–3 a week. That's enough for the page to look alive and up to date, and it leaves you time to write good posts instead of posts "just to have something."
  • Stories: several times a week — daily if you can. Stories are quick to make and disappear after 24 hours, so they don't need to be perfect. They keep you top of mind with people who already follow you.
  • Reels: one a week, if you can. Short video is the main way Instagram and Facebook show you to people who don't follow you yet. No time to film? AI videos are a way to produce video without a shoot day.

What about Facebook versus Instagram? For most businesses the same content works on both, with small tweaks to the text. There's no need to create everything twice — post to both and watch where the responses come from.

Why more isn't always better

A weak post doesn't just "not help" — it teaches your followers to scroll past. When most of your posts get no response, the system shows the next ones to fewer people. That's why two good posts a week beat seven written under pressure. The right question isn't "how many?" but "how many can I post consistently, at a standard I'm proud of?"

What to post so you never run out of ideas

Most businesses get stuck not for lack of time, but on the question "what do I post today?" Four types of content are enough to fill a whole month:

  • Tips and common questions. Every question customers ask you on the phone is a ready-made post. If one person asked, ten others wondered.
  • Behind the scenes. The work, the team, the place, your day. People buy from people, and content like this builds more trust than any ad.
  • Work and results. Before and after, a finished project, customer feedback — with the customer's permission.
  • Offers and promotions. Important, but in moderation: no more than one post in four. A page that's all promotions looks like a classified ads board, and people stop paying attention.

How to keep it up without the daily stress

  1. 1A monthly content calendar. Plan the whole month's posts in one sitting instead of inventing something new every morning. One hour at the start of the month saves dozens of small decisions.
  2. 2Scheduling in advance. Meta's free Meta Business Suite lets you schedule posts to Facebook and Instagram together. Write once, and the posts go out on their own.
  3. 3Recurring series. "Tip Tuesday" or a weekly Q&A — a fixed format saves thinking, and followers start looking out for it.
  4. 4Smart recycling. A post that did well six months ago can come back with a new design. Most of your followers didn't see it the first time.

Signs your posting frequency isn't working

  • The latest post on your page is more than a month old. It's the first thing a new customer sees, and it signals a business that has disappeared.
  • You post in bursts. An intense week, then silence. That's exactly the pattern the algorithm doesn't like.
  • Even your existing followers don't respond. If even people who know you scroll past, the problem is probably the content, not the quantity.

And how do you measure it? Not by likes. Check how many people your posts reached and, most importantly, how many enquiries, messages and calls came from the page. If you also run paid ads and aren't seeing enquiries, we've written about the common reasons ads don't bring leads.

What if you just don't have time?

That's the situation of most business owners, and it's fine — you're busy running a business. There are two ways forward: set aside a fixed hour a week with a ready content calendar, or hand it to someone else. In our social media management, the Basic package includes 8 posts a month — two a week — with a content calendar you approve once a month, in advance. That way your page is updated every week, and you don't have to remember.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a business post on Instagram?

Two to three feed posts a week, Stories several times a week, and one Reel a week if you can manage it. That's enough to look active and reach new people, while leaving you time to make each post worthwhile.

How often should a business post on Facebook?

Two to three times a week works for most businesses — usually the same content you post on Instagram, with small tweaks to the text. A Facebook page that's updated every week looks active to customers who are checking you out.

What is the best time to post on social media?

There's no universal best time — it depends on when your own followers are online. The insights in Meta Business Suite show when your audience is most active; post then, and judge by the results over a few weeks rather than a single post.

What about TikTok and LinkedIn?

The same rule applies everywhere: choose a pace you can keep up. Video-first platforms like TikTok reward posting short videos often, while on LinkedIn two or three thoughtful posts a week is plenty for most business-to-business companies.
